Chapter 59

Luke watched the storm coalesce out of nothing. The towering clouds swirled, swelling to greater and greater magnitude, and the wind blew around them in chaotic gusts. Lightning played around Sally, dancing through her fingertips and down her arms, to the brown-tipped mounds of her breasts, over her stomach, between her legs. She yelped and wriggled her body, black eyes wide.

“Oh,” she said, “oh what the–oh!” She spread her legs farther apart, as if caught in the middle of a jumping jack. “I’ve never done this right after sex, when I’m aroused, when I’m so aware–holy shit!” Electric lights sparked across her legs, lighting up her skin, almost from the inside out. Luke reached out and touched her; he got a small jolt, not entirely unpleasant. He scooted forward to her and raised his mouth to her clit. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 59

Just as no one had told me how the sea would sound, no one had told me how a ship would smell. Like salt and spray, and like the sweat of men working, that I expected. But the sails and deck in the sun had a scent of their own, sweet in the way that some of the fragrant trees in the deep woods smelled.

As we sat on the deck in the sun, I remarked upon this to Roichal, who merely looked at me curiously. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 65

Capricious: Chapter 58

A new chapter appears every Tuesday. This week is Chapter Fifty-Eight.

Chapter 58

Luke looked over the top of the rusted Ford, gauging how far away Brent was, obscured by multiple skeletal motorcycles and a contorted chassis. He put his hands on the ground. “Get ready,” he said to Allison, and curled his back like a stretching cat. His magic roiled through him, a warm current in rivers of blood and muscle and bone. It washed out of him, into the ground, as if he were made of the same material as the earth. He focused it, sent it crashing toward Brent. The tinker fae shrieked as a jutting spire of rock threw him into the air. Allison fired, and Brent fell back to the ground. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 58

I could feel my own heart thundering in my chest, hear the rush in my ears, as Sergetten stepped away. I thought for a moment that he went to open the door to the guards who would surely just run me through this time, rather than give me a chance to escape. I tugged on the bonds around my wrists, dangling me from the end of Sergetten’s bedpost, but it was some strong stuff he’d bound me with, neither rope nor leather. I was on tiptoe and could not get much purchase.

The next voice I heard was the Lord High Mage’s. “I know not what plot might have brought you under the thrall of this traitor, Sergetten,” he said. “But if you surrender him now, you shall have every opportunity to explain yourself.” Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 64

Capricious: Chapter 57

A new chapter appears every Tuesday. This week is Chapter Fifty-Seven.

Chapter 57

Luke caught up to Sally and Allison behind Brent’s house, and the three of them stopped, crouching, behind a pile of rust that was once a tractor. The backyard was a breathtaking field of chaos, full of cars, boats, bicycles, and parts for every mechanical thing ever made, all thrown haphazardly into the brush. Blackberry brambles crawled out from beneath a trio of old Triumph motorcycles, briars curtained off a stripped-down Volkswagen, and a holly bush was caught in a permanent act of exploding from within a propane gas grill, its red berries like bright embers. It looked like a mechanic’s shop long after an apocalypse. For Luke, who was as delighted with machines as a child in a Toys”R”Us, it was a macabre scene. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 57

I woke to the sound of Roichal’s boots making the stones and shells crunch as he made his way back to the shelter. There was barely enough light in the sky to see by, and I could make out the colorless shape of Jort, still asleep on the far side of the shelter, leaning against the wall with his hands bound behind him.

I could hear Roichal was limping. He groaned as he heaved himself up onto the platform with one large step of his good leg.

“Sir?” I sat up. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 63

Chapter 56

To Luke’s surprise, Sally put a hand on his arm as he went to get out of the car, stilling him. Her hand was warm, and there was a not entirely friendly electricity to her touch that unnerved him. She was revved up and ready to rock and roll.

“Luke,” she said, “I think you’d better stay in the car.”

His brow furrowed, and his own stubbornness stirred to match hers. “I’m sorry, what? Maybe you had better stay in the car. You’re here to accuse him, I’m here to hear his side of it.” Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 56

50th Night—Is That All There Is?

“So what happened to Adoric?” Joshua looked up from eating his soup. “And what happened in Berlin?”

Dhiar waved a hand. “I’ve been boring you with my reminiscing for long enough. Are you sure that’s enough for you to eat? I can whip up another pot of it in no time…” Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 50

The next morning Sergetten hooded me again, and broke his fast upon the terrace outside his rooms. Besides the hood I wore only a drape of cloth that covered my privates, and he bade me kneel beside him while he ate, favoring me with morsels from time to time as the hood left my mouth free. A bit of meat, then a crust of bread sweetened with honey, and so on. The autumn chill was starting to creep down the mountains and I shivered some while trying to hold an obedient pose, warmed only by his quiet praise when I succeeded.

A knock came at the door. He answered it, leaving me where I was, and I could hear him raise his voice but not make out the words. He returned to me a few moments later and led me back inside. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 62

Chapter 55

The phone at Sundance Hospital rang twice, and the receptionist picked up. Luke asked if Kristin and the others had arrived the night before; they had. He asked if Kristin was still there, and he was on hold for a long time, listening to a static-ridden synthesizer version of “Don’t Stand So Close to Me,” before Kristin’s gruff voice answered. She sounded like she was smoking, and Luke longed for a cigarette. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 55
