Chapter 58

Luke looked over the top of the rusted Ford, gauging how far away Brent was, obscured by multiple skeletal motorcycles and a contorted chassis. He put his hands on the ground. “Get ready,” he said to Allison, and curled his back like a stretching cat. His magic roiled through him, a warm current in rivers of blood and muscle and bone. It washed out of him, into the ground, as if he were made of the same material as the earth. He focused it, sent it crashing toward Brent. The tinker fae shrieked as a jutting spire of rock threw him into the air. Allison fired, and Brent fell back to the ground.

“Damn,” she said. “Just grazed him.”

“Son of a bitch!” Brent yelled. “What the hell was that?”

“The power of sandstone compels you,” Luke barked back at him. “Well, propels you, anyway. Give yourself up or we can continue playing Whack-a-Fae.” He sat heavily, not wanting to admit how much raw energy it took for him to do that kind of earth magic outside of his home ground.

“I have a better idea,” Brent said in a ferocious snarl.

Luke and Sally exchanged a dark look, and Allison checked her phone. She held up two fingers. Two minutes until reinforcements arrived.

There was a guttural, churning noise from where Brent hid. An engine choked and screamed to life. An enormous shape loomed up out of the junk, pulling itself together like a rust golem. It spread its great wings, patchwork canvas over metal spines, and engine-driven propellers lifted it rapidly into the air. It swooped skyward, its engines shrieking and smoking, like a terrible clockwork bat carrying a tinker fae in its skeletal belly. It gained speed and altitude with unbelievable swiftness and rode over the tops of the trees.

“OK,” Allison said at last to the other two flabbergasted myth-folk, “how does he not know that he is a supervillain?”

“We are all the heroes of our own stories,” Sally said.

“Oh shit,” Luke said. “We’re near the portal!”

Allison’s face turned grave. “You think that’s where he’s headed?”

“It’s where I would go if a bunch of myth-folk were after me. It’s near impossible to track anyone through it. August is the only one I’d say has any chance of following him, and he’s not here.”

Allison nodded, tapped something into her phone, and then handed it and her gun to Luke. “We’re also near the river. I’ll beat him to the portal.” She headed off in the direction of the river, skirting around the cottonmouth-infested junkyard to travel by a path more familiar to lawn mowers.

“Luke,” Sally said as soon as Allison was gone, taking his face in her hands. “I have an idea. But I’ll need your help. All the energy I’ve given you, that we’ve all given you in the past few days–you need to give me anything you have left to spare.”

Luke frowned. “I–what? It doesn’t really work like that, Sal. I get charged up, I can use it for my own magic, for grounding and earth magic and such. I can even give some of it back, like I did last night. Son of a bitch, was it only last night? But I can’t give magical energy back the way I can take it, not to that extent. I’m not a car battery.”

Sally huffed, frustrated. “You’ve done it before. You told me! Once a door is opened it can be passed through in either direction. Your words.”

Luke shook his head, freeing himself of her hands. “I don’t remember saying that. Doesn’t sound like something I’d say.”

“But it’s something one of your first lives would have said. In one of our other lives, you told me about how you used magic from others to charge someone else. You may have hardly ever done it, but I know it’s possible. You just have to be really careful, because it can kill you if you give all of it away.”

“I’m sorry, which life? And I’m sorry, kill me?”

“The second one. In Greece.”

Luke put his palm to his forehead, thinking hard. “I don’t remember that.”

She drew in a deep breath, eyes going wide. “The faerie chick. In Tír na nÓg. She drained you of some of your memories. Well fuck.” She grabbed him by his shirt collar and dragged him down into the tall grass. “OK, satyr, we’re going to learn a new trick. I know for certain it can be done, you told me about it yourself. Work with me, baby. Charge the hell out of me, so that I can kick this guy’s ass and we can go home. And, uh, don’t die.”

She kissed him hard, tongue and teeth and lips pressing against his with bruising intensity. He folded her into his arms and went on to her neck, biting just hard enough to hear her gasp. He rolled his tongue against the edge of her ear, and sucked the lobe into his mouth. She put her hands up his shirt and scraped her nails down his back; he shivered at the near-pain pleasure. She wrapped her legs around him, grinding against his erection through their jeans. He fell on the ground with her, groaning and rolling his hips against her. He was dizzy with want, aching to be inside her already, his heart driven to a frenzied rhythm with the sudden drowning lust.

She apparently was in a similar state, because she pushed him away to rapidly undo her jeans and push them down her legs and away, along with her panties, socks, and shoes. Luke undid his jeans and pushed them down. He just managed to get them and his boots off when Sally pulled him back down. His cock was achingly stiff and swollen and became even more so as she rubbed her clit up and down his shaft. Her juices coated him, and the heat of her pussy nearly burned. He tilted his hips back, to angle the tip of his cock against the folds of her pussy. She moaned, shivering, as he pressed the head of his cock inside her, then further in, then sank his cock into her to the hilt. She clenched around him, squeezing him, and it was almost too tight and too hot to stand. He held her down by her shoulders and began to move back and forth, fucking her with fierce, jutting thrusts.

Sally arched her back and spread her legs, asking for more of him. He pushed her shirt up past her pink bra, pushed the bra up too and exposed her breasts. He groped her roughly, bit her, and she cried out beneath him. She clawed at his shirt, pulled the shirt away from him. She bit him back. He drew his legs under him, and she straddled his lap. Luke drew gasping, rough breaths as she moved up and down on his cock, her breasts bouncing against him, her body spasming around his cock as she came.

Somewhere in his mind, he was aware that it was broad daylight, in an overgrown backyard, in full view of neighbors who potentially might be looking out their windows, especially with the gunshots. There was spear grass around them, and sharp little rocks under his thighs. He just didn’t care. The suddenness of their encounter rocked his center, and he couldn’t recover, couldn’t think or reason. Sally pushed him down, riding up fast and down hard, pleasuring herself upon him, and he met her with equal vigor. She thrust a hand onto his stomach, just below his ribs, and it knocked the air out of him for a moment.

“Here,” she said. “Gather your energy here, in the core of your body, like Allison told me to do. Remember that, when she taught me to charge you?”

Luke managed to nod, images of Sally in Allison’s arms flickering across his mind. And he thought he couldn’t be any more turned on. He imagined all his magical energy, every bit of lust and arousal he could gather, pouring into a tight, hot little ball under Sally’s hand. It almost physically hurt, willing that much magic into one place. It seeped into him from the earth itself, like pulling up a plant by its roots.

She grabbed him by the horns and held him down. She rode him as hard as she could, a near frenzied rut. “Take all that,” she panted, “and give it to me. Give it to me, baby. Thrust it into me and make me feel it. Come in me and send your magic along with it.”

Luke cried out, a scream racking his throat, and came as hard as he could ever remember coming. His vision went white, little stars inside his mind, as sheer pleasure overtook him. He willed his magic into her, penetrating and saturating her with his energy, sending himself into her as surely as he sent his magic into the earth. She cried out too, and her body locked against his, rocking and clenching upon him, both of them nearly choked with the intensity of their orgasms.

Sally fell forward onto him and lay there, panting, spent. She pushed herself up on one elbow as soon as she could, dark eyes peering at him from under rumpled locks of equally dark hair. “You OK?” She was trembling all over.

“Yeah,” Luke said. “It was hard to hold on to any energy at the end… but I think I did.”

“Well, you’re alive.”

“You’re sure blithe about that. And about asking me to risk my life.”

Sally gave him a lopsided grin. “I have faith in you. I knew you could do it.” She reluctantly pulled away from him, and their bodies parted. She gave a little moan and ran her hand down his chest. “I wish I could have you inside me a lot longer than this.”

“Give me an hour or so and we’ll see.”

She stood up on quivering legs. “First, death and dismemberment. Then sex. Lots of sex.”

He sat up on his elbows, watching her stand, naked and trembling. He was suddenly a little bit afraid of her; she was 100 percent serious. There was a murderous light in her distinctly avian eyes. She raised her arms, and called her storm out of a clear blue sky.
