Chapter 36

Luke woke with the dawn, as he had for the past several hundred years. Sally lay beside him, significantly more rumpled than she had been the night before. She was, Luke had just discovered, an active sleeper.

She breathed deep, almost huffing, the lines of worry on her face slackened. Her dark hair lay in a careless tangle around her face; her spaghetti-strap pajamas were pulled askew by her midnight squirming. Luke bit his lip, looking her over, so touchable and pretty. He could see the outline of her breasts against the thin pajama fabric, and the cleft of her cleavage, the curve of her hip where her shirt had pulled up in the night. He ran a hand down her side; she muttered in her sleep, like a grumbling squirrel, and was still again. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 36

Chapter 35

For a moment, Sally looked alarmed. “Do you… ah… want kids?” she asked Luke.

Luke looked down at Sally’s stomach. A series of images flashed though his mind in quick succession, like a film montage–Sally holding a baby, following an exploring toddler at the park, sitting with a young child doing homework, reading a dark-haired little girl to sleep. He tried to imagine Sally pregnant. Pregnant with his baby, her tummy round and smooth. He brought his hands around to the front of her waist and ran his thumbs over her currently mostly flat stomach.

“Yeah,” he said, “I do want kids. You and I, we’d make some pretty ones.” Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 35

Chapter 34

Luke’s brow furrowed as Cormick turned onto the highway that would lead to Sally’s house–or rather, Sally’s parents’ house. “We going to your place?” he asked her.

“Yeah,” Sally said, “it’s kinda become our base of operations.”

“Since when?” Luke felt like he’d missed something important, some little detail that would pop the whole scene into focus. “How long was I gone? Felt like a few hours to me.” Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 34

Chapter 33

Orson considered the spear in his lap. “Cuchulainn’s spear…. It’s strange to see it after so many years, and in such a different setting. Like seeing your kindergarten teacher in the supermarket–a collision of worlds.” He looked back up at Luke. “So you paid for the spear with some of your past life memories–that’s good, actually. Frankly I’m surprised she’d barter with you, those fae wraiths are a dangerous lot. Normally she would have just drunk you dry, or at least hung you up for later.” Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 33

Chapter 32

Allison let Sally slide down to the ground at last. She watched the girl pant on all fours for a minute before declaring loudly, “I am so goddamn good. That was one of the coolest things ever.”

“Very impressive,” Luke said, drumming his fingers against his leg and rocking slightly. He felt like he could go bouncing off the trees around the clearing, a shiny steel ball in a pinball machine, a complete turnaround from his near-coma of earlier. He walked over to Sally. When he knelt beside her to ask how she was, she tackled him and kissed him, hard and sloppy.

“You,” she said, “are trouble.” Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 32

Chapter 31

Sally shifted in Allison’s arms; Allison only held her tighter from behind, as if willing her to listen, to heed her. “Charging a satyr isn’t complicated, but simple doesn’t necessarily mean easy. It’s like birthing a baby–you have to know what muscles you’re supposed to use, and you probably don’t even know you have these magical muscles until you start using them. Direct your magic toward Luke. Funnel it toward him. Right now you radiate all over, like one of those static electricity ball thingies. You gotta be more like lightning, sending it all right to him.” Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 31

Chapter 30

When Luke came through the portal back into his world, his first thought was that it all looked so gray. He felt himself tilting off the side of the horse–or rather, the world slid sideways, and down he went with it. He tried to cling to the horse’s neck, but his arms fell away, as if the simple act of holding on were an impossible feat of strength. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 30

Chapter 29

She sat sidesaddle on a skeletal horse, and gauzy wraps draped her bones in what would have been a scandalous and enticing fashion had she been whole. Scraps and ropes of long, blonde hair clung to her scalp, held in place mostly by the deteriorating silken scarf around her brow. She crooked her finger, and the great spear Luke carried became impossibly heavy, unbearably heavy–he went down to his knees, the spear across both shoulders, both hands held in place by invisible bonds. He could not put it down. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 29

Chapter 28

The path through the gate, through the web of roads leading to all worlds, was more dizzying and terrifying and wonderful than anything Luke had seen in all his many, many lives. Colors he had never seen before, that did not exist in his reality, blazed around him like shattered lightning. He looked into the abyss beyond the light and saw eyes gazing back at him, marking his passing, the great guardians of the chasms. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 28

Chapter 27

When they got out of the car at the base of the trail that led to the gateway, Luke took Sally’s hand and held her back. The others took the hint and walked ahead, leaving them to their own company for a moment. Cormick and Orson headed into the woods to scout for any trolls that might be nearby, and August went straight up the trail.

Luke looped his arms around Sally’s waist and pulled her up against him.

“You gotta come back,” Sally said, knotting her fists in the front of his shirt. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 27
