Chapter 27

When they got out of the car at the base of the trail that led to the gateway, Luke took Sally’s hand and held her back. The others took the hint and walked ahead, leaving them to their own company for a moment. Cormick and Orson headed into the woods to scout for any trolls that might be nearby, and August went straight up the trail.

Luke looped his arms around Sally’s waist and pulled her up against him.

“You gotta come back,” Sally said, knotting her fists in the front of his shirt.

“That’s the plan,” he said.

She kissed him, opening her mouth to flick her tongue against his, tasting him. Luke felt his body stir again, still frustrated from their interruption by August and the trolls. Sally obviously felt the same, because she backed against the car, pulling him along. Luke pinned her against the side of the sedan, feeling her breasts move against his chest. She was warm, and soft, and she wanted him. His cock hardened, and Sally felt it–she rolled her hips against him, making a protesting noise of frustration. He thrilled to be brought to arousal so quickly, agonizing that they couldn’t jump each other right then.

“God, Luke,” Sally said, “I wish we could–”

“And why can’t we?”

She bit her lip. “Because I don’t want our first time to be a quickie. I want it,” she whispered in his ear, “to go a long damn time.”

Luke agreed, but it didn’t make pulling away any easier. He ducked his head and kissed along her neck. Her skin tasted salty and sweet at the same time. “When I get back,” he purred in her ear, “I’m going to make a dishonest woman out of you.”

She raised one leg to his hip to grind against him. “You better,” she said. Her cheeks were flushed, and he knew if he slid his hand between her legs, he’d find her slick and swollen, aching to have him. It wouldn’t take much–remove her shorts, take out his cock, he could fuck her right up against the car, or bent over the hood, or across the backseat.

But that wasn’t how they wanted their first time to be. So he took deep, steadying breaths and stepped away from her. She took his hand, and they started up the trail together. It took until they reached the top of the hill for his cock to stand down, and it felt ready to return to attention at the slightest provocation.

Fortunately, the prospect of riding August’s horse was enough to wither his soul. The horse glared at him with baleful glowing red eyes and bared its great yellow teeth, its tail whipping in agitation.

“Where the hell did the horse come from?” Luke whispered to Sally. “We drove here!”

“Under his hat?” Sally guessed.

“He is with me always,” August said. “We have not been separated for so long; this will be difficult for him. And me.”

“To hell with that. I want Hellion here to be nice and relaxed. Could we get him stoned first or something?” Luke squawked.

August ignored this and held the horse’s head while Luke mounted. August murmured to it and stroked its cheek while Sally adjusted the stirrups to fit Luke’s legs. The gateway lay to the west, a great stone wall with a natural hole worn through it by time and wind and magic. It was a good twenty feet high and twice that across–big enough for an awful lot of terrible things to pass, Luke thought.

“Be careful,” Sally said for the umpteenth time. She buckled the stirrup strap and let the saddle flap fall back over it. She held the stirrup while Luke put his foot in it, then adjusted the one on the other side. The horse shifted beneath him, its great bulk feeling more like the rolling sea than a living animal. The horse was tense. Luke adjusted the soft black leather reins, resisting the urge to hold them both in one hand.

“I just wish he rode Western,” Luke said. “Gonna be a trick riding English after so long. Hope he doesn’t expect me to post.”

“You can sit the trot if you want,” August said coolly. “But don’t give him an excuse to buck you off, or we will never find you.”

Luke leaned down to kiss Sally. She was warm, but she shivered. He would be thinking about her the entire time he was gone. Surely they couldn’t come this far, overcome the hardship of the lives they’d lived before this, and not get at least a little time to be happy together. Even as he thought it, he knew it was a dangerous train of thought.

Sally was evidently thinking the same thing, because she grabbed the front of his shirt and said, “You come back, hear?”

He straightened up and shook his horns. “My lady demands and I obey.”

“I’m serious!”

“So am I.”

“OK,” August said, stepping back from the horse. “He’s all yours. He knows where to go.”

“And I know what to look for when I get there.” He turned the horse’s head toward the gateway and pressed his heels lightly inward. The horse stepped out briskly, covering the stony ground in great strides. When they reached the gate, Luke looked back over his shoulder. Sally stood out in bright profile, as if she had a spotlight on her, while August was nearly invisible in the darkness. As they passed through the gateway, wings of light shone around her–then she and the desert around her were gone.
