A new chapter appears every Thursdays. This week is Chapter Twenty-Eight.

28th Night—Oh To Be In Love

“I hope you’re not getting bored with the Great City,” Dhiar all but whispered, his arms coiled around the angel’s as they continued down the path.

Siros looked suddenly to the side, to face the Incubus, smiling to him with a little surprise in his countenance. “How could I? It’s endlessly interesting! There’s countless places to go, countless things to do… and one magnificently special Incubus to do them with.”

All around and above them curled the underground gardens, subterranean and lush below the city of Dis itself. The winding passages twisted this way and that, coming to entrances and exits like some sort of floral subway.

Vines and mosses grew over the walls of the corridors, strange bulbous flowers glowed in the low light, ice-chilled streams trickled down in little rock-cups to shimmering pools. In the air, all around, the water’s pure, clean scent mingled with the scents of the soil, deep and rich and heady, and the rocks, the mosses, all of the life. Above it all, the delicate and subtle nectar of the aromatic dark-blooming flowers lingered at the nose. The place wove an elegant and elaborate tapestry for the senses.

Dhiar’s cheeks coloured just a tad, and he rested his cheek on the angel’s shoulder. “You always know what to say,” he quietly murmured. “Even if it might be a little corny coming from anyone else.”

“Oh, might it!” Siros chortled. Part of what drew him to Dhiar was his honesty, and indeed he had said demons had little occasion or need to lie, and he himself bore no talent for it.

Certainly, Dhiar could distract, and he could even make one forget, but to deceive was never a talent of his. Yet even when he was the most unapologetically honest he could be, something about his intrinsic charm made it impossible to hold it against him. The way he spoke, the way he phrased things… and those eyes, that smile… how could Siros bear a grudge?

He pulled the Incubus closer with a wing curled around him. “I think that’s why you like me though, isn’t it… admit it!”

“Of course it is.” Dhiar turned to kiss the top of the other man’s shoulder. “One of many, many reasons.”

Each of the gardens had a different look to it. One would be short and small, another would open up to an expanse of greenery and little glowing spheres like firefly-light. Still another held a roaring underground waterfall, undoubtedly pouring from some place in the city. Another spread out like a terrace, with mosses like soft grass blanketing the rock underfoot, as if ready for a band of picnickers.

The two settled onto a vacant patch, holding onto each other. The moss was warmer than either had expected, especially with the variable warmth and chill of the gardens. Sometimes the darkness switched at seeming whim.

So many days they had whiled away in the Great City, in the Abyss. And yet here they found themselves, like so many days before their holiday, days spent in a subterranean city so very unlike this one. Dhiar placed his hand on Siros’s chest and slowly rubbed in a widening circle.

“We’ll have to get back soon, I think,” he gently offered.

Siros nodded his head in return. “Yes…” Taking a deep breath, he let out a quiet sigh, but it echoed and lingered along the smooth stone around them. “We’ll go back fresh, though. Fresh, refreshed, and stronger than ever from this.”

“And we can come back anytime.” Dhiar kissed from the corner of the angel’s jaw to his chin, up to his lips, lingering for a moment and then nestling his nose back into his luxurious silken locks.

“It’s funny that this makes me miss it. Noctemburg, I mean.” Siros let his eyes wander along the dome-ceiling, along the vines and the clouds of green and luminescent white. “When we came here, I thought I’d never miss it again. But there’s still plenty to do there, isn’t there? And plenty we’ve not done. So many places we haven’t been together. There’s a restaurant I’d like to take you to, just outside of that place they call Angel Town…”

“Really?” Dhiar traced the outline of Siros’s nipple, through his blouse. “Not stuck-up?”

The winged man grinned at the question. “Not at all! It’s extraordinary.”

The two shared another kiss. Dhiar slid his body halfway onto Siros’s, covering him a bit like a living blanket. His warmth surrounded the angel. “Tell me about it.”

“Well, it’s a vegetarian place,” Siros explained. “They have the best food… even a buffet at lunch and dinner that you can get. Really, you can get them to cook by request too, whatever you want! It’s marvellous.”

“I’m glad you remember that about me.”

“What, the vegetarian thing…?”

“Mm hmm.” Dhiar closed his eyes, squeezing Siros’s far shoulder. “Some forget. It’s not a huge thing, but for me… well, it’s important. I can feel the past of items… things… and if something’s in me and it isn’t something that had a peaceful way of getting there…”

“It’s unpleasant. Yes, I know. I care about that. And about you.” Siros stroked his fingertips over the Incubus’s cheek. “That’s why I attend carefully to such things. I would never wish to bring you harm or discomfort. The time we have with each other should be the nectar of life.”

A little smile spread across Dhiar’s lips. “Oh yes. I like that. I like that phrasing. ‘The nectar of life’… you’re a poet, you know?”

“I fancy myself more of a dabbler,” Siros replied, propping up one of his legs. “Not really anything serious.”

“I don’t mean… like writing them,” Dhiar continued. “It’s just the way you put things, you’re so poetic. So artistic. Whatever your thoughts are, you always seem to… just make me marvel at the way you say them!”

“Let me make you marvel, then.” Siros turned his head and leaned closer.

Dhiar took the hint and brought his lips to meet the angel’s. And then he melted into them, mouth to mouth, warming in clouds of breath, in the gardens underground.
