Chapter 46

Luke, Orson, and Sally surrounded the sobbing former troll in silence, stunned by the unprecedented death of a myth-folk’s immortal soul. Luke was the first to move, to press on with what had to be done, though he did so with the feeling he had just acquired several new nightmares. There were still the chupacabras to deal with. They were currently hiding in the shrubs, waiting to see how things developed before committing themselves, but they would not hold back for the sake of reverence for the fallen. Chapter 45

Alan didn’t look like a cop anymore. He’d left his police cruiser in the grass; his uniform was shredded into a tattered rag that clung to his body, stony as the others, dark and sharp like dull obsidian. He showed a jagged mouth full of teeth to Luke as the satyr stepped out of Sally’s house and crossed the front porch, rifle at ease but ready. The body of the troll who had been shot still lay in the yard. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 45

Chapter 44

Luke followed Sally up the front steps and into the house. His body shook from the adrenaline of the battle with the troll, with Mae, with himself. His head was back to hurting; had it been only that morning that August had given him a mild concussion? It seemed like days ago. The grounding magic from earlier wasn’t going to hold off the pain and fatigue forever. He was hungry–no, he decided, he was ravenous. He hadn’t eaten since before he’d gone through the portal on August’s horse. August couldn’t be a whole lot better off. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 44

Chapter 43

Somewhere beyond the nymph-induced bliss that rode roughshod over Luke’s mind, there was a tiny, screaming remnant of his psyche that understood what was happening. That distant bit of consciousness looked out of his eyes but could not speak, or move, or stop. The rest of him, like August and Orson, was wholly engulfed by Mae’s magic. He had never seen her cut loose to this extent; on an intellectual level it was an impressive show of power, but one he wouldn’t appreciate until later. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 43

Chapter 42

The drive to Sally’s parents’ home was tense and quiet. The released prisoners were dehydrated and weak, more fit for a hospital than a showdown with a group of deranged trolls. Brent suggested that a detour to the hospital might be the right course, but Luke pointed out that questions would inevitably rise about how they got in such a state, and when left unanswered, would certainly delay their return to Sally and company and might even result in a search of the car. Including the trunk, which contained a dead goblin in a cracked blue tarp. All discussion was tabled. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 42

Chapter 41

Across the aisle of the storage facility, Alan cocked his handgun. It was police issue, and Alan made no secret of his marksmanship with it, but it was the monstrous, hungry eyes narrowed at him over the barrel that really made Luke fearful. Alan would not hesitate to shoot him, and Luke knew what it was to be shot. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 41

Chapter 40

Luke, August, and Orson stared out the car windows at the self-storage facility just outside the two-block strip that claimed to be downtown Fox Pass. A quarter mile away, people went about their business at the post office, the courthouse, the pharmacy, and the library. In the back seat, Luke lit a cigarette, gave it to Orson wordlessly out of long-formed habit, and lit another for himself. August rolled down the window on the passenger side. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 40

Chapter 39

August was still talking about rushing out to find the missing myth-folk when the adrenaline wore off and he seemed to begin to feel the deep gashes in his chest. In only a few minutes time, he gave up the idea and sank to the carpet, light-headed.

“We should take him to a hospital,” Charlie said. He was out of the bathroom and now lay curled up on the bed with his head in Sally’s lap. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 39

Chapter 38

August did not react well to being informed that metaphysically ripping out the corrupt influence on his magic would hurt. Orson whipped behind him and put him in an armlock, and Sally warned August from the door that the shotgun was, in fact, loaded and in capable hands. Luke, whose head was still spinning, could do little more than threaten loudly in colorful language. Cormick went for his cell phone in the kitchen, to call in what few reinforcements they had left.

Luke felt a pang of pity for August as Charlie stalked toward him. He looked more than afraid; his face was clouded with the rage and disbelief of betrayal. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 38

Chapter 37

“Hey. Hey August. August, wake up. What color are your horse’s eyes normally?”

August growled low in his throat as he slowly opened menacing blue eyes. Luke decided he looked scarier when he was rudely awakened than he did throwing his flaming skull around. He was in Sally’s parents’ bed; beside him, Cormick was still mostly asleep. When August stirred, Cormick pulled the blankets up over his head.

“What the hell?” August snarled. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 37
