Chapter 6

There was little time for chupacabra hunting during the week. Luke was up before dawn, as he normally was, to feed and water the animals, gather the eggs, milk the goats, check on a broody hen, weed the vegetable garden, spray the peach trees, and make note of the thousand little chores that needed to be done. The list rattled through his head on his way to work. Fix the fence posts that were rotting off at the bottom. Get the bees out of the shed–after building a beehive for them to go into. Take down the dead bois d’arc. Get the deadwood out of the trees near the house. Trim the goats’ hooves. Treat the chickens for lice and mites. Get more diatomaceous earth to deworm the chickens. Deworm the goats. Take the dogs in for their shots. Dogs…. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 6

Chapter 5

Sunday night was council night. Luke didn’t normally go, and Orson usually sat in the back and said nothing, arms folded across his round chest. Tonight, Luke, Orson, and Sally took the front row.

Council night in Fox Pass, Texas, was a sight to behold. It appeared to the human eye to be any ordinary city council meeting, though heavily attended and held quite more often than any other. The eyes of a magical creature saw things differently. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 5

Chapter 4

Luke watched the sky lighten and the world wake up. When the goats were bleating and the kids playing, he got into the cab of his truck and drove to Wilson’s house. There hadn’t been so much as a coyote all night. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 4

Chapter 3

Late that night or early the next morning, Luke sat in the bed of his truck, staring out across a pen of goats. They were startlingly white in the moonlight, almost shimmering. Earlier they had been noisy and boisterous, the deep bleats of the nannies mixing in with the sweet baby-bleats of their kids, occasionally punctuated with the deep-throated bleat of the billy. Now they were still and quiet, asleep except for the billy, who dozed standing up. The nannies and kids slept piled up next to each other with their heads laid across each other’s backs, giving the impression of a great lumpy snowfield in the middle of the desert. Chapter 2

The red pickup truck kicked up a wake of dust as it sped down FM 190. On either side of the snaking two-lane asphalt, the West Texas landscape stretched wide and lonely, a flat scrub-brush plain dotted with mesquite and nettle, fringed with jutting mountains on every side of the horizon but east. Dark yellow dust covered everything, including the two men inside the truck. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 2

Chapter 1

A satyr and a merrow burst through the door to the back office of Allison’s Café in each other’s arms. The satyr kicked the door closed behind him, picked the merrow up, and set her on the desk, a steel counter long ago commandeered from the kitchen. She wrapped her thighs around his hips, letting her waitressing skirt hike up high. He kissed her fiercely, the practiced kiss of someone who knew exactly how the other person kissed, how she liked to be touched–lips against her ears and her neck, hands cupping her breasts and then moving under her shirt and bra to stroke her hard nipples. His cock throbbed against the front of his jeans, and she unzipped his pants, pushed his boxers far enough down to get her hand around his cock, and began stroking him.
