46th Night—Universe Tipping

“I come from a city on the water,” Dhiar explained, his voice sweet and lingering on the air, vibrating lightly in the ears. “Tall and short buildings, stone paths all around, winding between the buildings and neighborhoods. So many trees. The grandest trees dwarf all the buildings, making huge canopies. Their arms stretch out, as if they were our guardians. They may well be.”

Adoric’s eyes were wide. He lifted his arms as the Incubus slipped his shirt off after his turtleneck. The man’s body felt warm and soft, with the light hairs all over the chest and down to the navel. He eased back to the bed, atop the mattress, and Dhiar all but draped over him like a personal blanket. Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 46

The King and Sergetten left me chained to the foot of the bed when the time for afternoon audiences arrived, and for the first time since Sergetten had explained his reason behind collaring me I felt once again like a lowly pet. I curled up and pretended to sleep, like a dog would. The hood covered my eyes in any case, so they could not tell if my eyes were open or closed. Through the door to the outer chamber, I could hear them speaking to each other as Sergetten helped him to dress.

Their voices were light and they spoke familiarly with one another, and I wondered how long they had known each other. Had Sergetten been apprenticed or fostered in the castle as a youth? At the keep where he was called lord there was no indication of a family, though, no parents or siblings, no paintings or tapestries depicting his line. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 58

Chapter 51

Back inside Sally’s parents’ double-wide, the mood had only worsened with the storm Sally had summoned up. Luke found that Orson had Mae in the spare room, trying to keep her calm and collected until they could take her somewhere safe; Cormick and August were back in Sally’s parents’ room, talking quietly; Allison and Agatha were in the kitchen, cleaning up after dinner; and Charlie dozed under a crocheted afghan on Sally’s bed, curled up into a little ball of traumatized Jersey Devil. 45th Night—Meteor

“So what’s your hometown like?”

“You’d like it,” Dhiar answered, leaning against Adoric under the stars, on the deck. The chill in the air and the sea spray had driven all the rest of the passengers inside. “It’s on the water.”

“Really! Actually I’m from a landlocked place.” The first mate exhaled a cloud of smoke that drifted out around his head like a halo. “I always wanted to see the sea, sail the oceans. I read all the stories about Sindbad and you know… all of his adventures, his ordeals…”

The Incubus turned his head to kiss softly at the place where the man’s ear met his cheek. He lowered his voice, deep and intimate. “And have you had adventures and ordeals like Sindbad?” Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 45

I woke in darkness, with Roichal spooned around me as usual, but I spent a moment in confusion wondering what was different. Then I shifted and heard the rustle of the straw ticking wrapped in the general’s cloak under us, followed by the whicker of a horse close by. Now I remembered. Our flight from the wildfire, Roichal not slowing until the horse needed to, dismounting and walking while I continued to ride. He only looked back when there was a river and a line of hills between us and the former mustering grounds. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 57

Chapter 50

A cedar trunk in the hayloft held old cotton quilts, their patterns long faded, their batting poking out of frayed seams and edging. The antique and heirloom quilts were safe in the house; these were the quilts of picnics in the pasture, forts in the tack room, and makeshift pallets in the alley outside a sick animal’s stall. It was one of these old quilts that Sally flung over the loose hay when she took Luke up to the loft in the barn. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 50
