Chapter 21

Luke knew better than to press Sally that day or the next, when Cormick called a city meeting and informed the rest of the myth-folk community of the disappearances of Glen and Brent. He called ahead to make sure she would have time to talk with him before he showed up the next day after work.

He found her in the barn, reorganizing the feed room. He leaned against the doorframe and watched her for a minute, partly admiring her butt and partly working up the nerve to say something. Finally she turned around, a piece of hay in her hair and her hands on her hips. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 21

15th Night—Slow Surfing

Dhiar pulled the laces at his hips free and worked his trousers down in the front. The cool air felt so good against his skin, especially between his legs. That always seemed to get hotter than anywhere else.

A little shiver ran along the small of his back as he began to relieve himself in the garden. Watering the trees, as he had put it. It was nice that Lothring actually managed to maintain some semblance of order in what had become a strange garden of chaos. This antiquated part of the city, moved past and largely forgotten, was overgrown and overrun. Except the revenant’s garden and his old house.

It wasn’t in the best of repair, by any means. But then he didn’t need it to be. Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 15

I wondered if the wagon would roll all night. Didn’t horses need to sleep, too? What about the driver? For myself, I was not sleepy at all. I was thankful for the summer night, as a chill stole over me that surely would have been unbearable had the air been colder. The creaking of the wheels and the sound of the hooves lulled me, but I did not sleep.

I could see little of what we passed. The road down the mountain was lined with trees, then at some point the way became flat. I could see from the stars above that now the mountains were to one side of us. East. We were going east, but I had no idea how far. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 27

Chapter 20

The next day, Luke drove up to Brent’s house after work, an old trailer in the same area as Orson’s–not so much a park as a side street that had slowly filled up with trailers. He stared at the 1980s-model single-wide over the top of his steering wheel, brow furrowed. If not for Glen’s disappearance, Brent’s absence from work that day would not have raised his hackles. The tinker fae was prone to bouts of both intense productivity, in which all other obligations would be forgotten in his fervor to finish some new project, and drunken stupor, a tear that could last a week if not checked. He never would have kept his job if the foreman wasn’t his cousin. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 20

14th Night—Jidai (Time Goes Around)

Dhiar could not face the warm colours of the neon in the front window of Phantasies. It just burned at his eyes. The lonely shop only reminded him how much he missed Evvin already.

But he had to do what was right. And there was always the happiness of having had what they had. It wasn’t over, not as such… but he knew how things like this tended to go. At least he also knew that the young man would be happy.

The Incubus rarely came to the fancier parts of town. It wasn’t that the prices were outside of his range; eternity made the accumulation of money a simple matter. The people there, however, tended to make him feel like an outsider. The part of town with Phantasies and the nearby club, even if a little dirty and unprestigious, possessed a certain homely trait to it. It felt like home, much moreso than the rest of the city. I was woken once during the night, when the driver stopped to urinate and urged me to do the same. He didn’t untie my hands, instead just pulling down the rough trousers I wore and telling me to crouch. Once back in the carriage, I stayed on the floor, afraid of being thrown from the bench if we hit a rough patch of road.

I woke again when the carriage lurched to a stop and I hit my bruised cheek against the floor. Daylight came through the narrow window and I could hear voices. I raised my head only to find my neck so stiff from having slept with my arms tied behind my back that I could barely get myself into a sitting position before the door swung open. I blinked, trying to clear my vision, then realized one of my eyes was swollen shut. The man standing there was wearing a military uniform.

It took me a moment to remember why I was in so much pain. Seroi. The king. The beating. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 26
