6th Night—La La La

Was this what made a kept man? Evvin arranged the elegant glass phials of oil on the shelf. His mind was never entirely on work like this. Either Dhiar distracted him, or something else did. Tedious work never kept his concentration long. Still, the atmosphere of Phantasies calmed his mind and made it easier. He could appreciate the pleasant qualities effortlessly now.

He was dressed better than he had ever been, fed better than he had ever been… still a bit bony, he had gained some weight. But Dhiar only fawned over him more. It wasn’t like this with the humans in the city, or the vampires for example. It was easy to criticise someone for being heavier than you when you don’t actually have to eat food. It took us some time to move through the corridors and across the courtyards to reach the banquet hall. I had never dreaded a beating so much.

No, that is probably not true. But one forgets the dread, in between. My back tingled with the memory of how severely the king had whipped me the last time, though, and I thought about Dubacki and wondered if the king would even hesitate to unman me with the whip if I could not control myself. Chapter 10

Luke had vaguely hoped that in short order, August would be happily packed up and shunted off as far northeast as he could go without running into the ocean. But his hopes were dashed. The headless horseman was still hanging around three weeks later, followed everywhere he went by impressed female gazes (and the occasional appreciative male gaze) and an ominous black horse. 5th Night—Get to Burning

“You’re an amazing cook, Dhiar!” Evvin rubbed his full stomach, smiling appreciatively to the Incubus seated next to him.

In front of them, on the coffee table in the centre of the sofa and chairs, sat a clay pot, and in it rested the meagre remains of the broth and fragments of food. The room still bore the comforting aroma of kabocha and tofu. Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 5

“Tcha. You just need to suck the heat out of it,” Bear said, drawing up water from the pump behind the stable and soaking my shirt with it, then pressing the wet, wadded cloth against my eye.

I did not flinch from the pressure or the cold. The chill dulled the pain, and in some way I couldn’t explain the feeling of Bear’s other hand, holding my head steady, felt as soothing as the cloth itself. I stayed still, then he pressed my own hand against the cloth and went back to pump up more of the water so cold it was nearly ice. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 17

Chapter 9

Luke was released from the hospital after thirty-nine stitches, a dizzying amount of medication, and a blood transfusion. He took one look at his truck, with the back window shattered and the seats soaked with blood, and called for a tow. Sally drove him to his house in her car. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 9

4th Night—A Case of You

Dhiar wished he smoked. He could start, he knew, but he didn’t really want to. It’s not that he had any concerns for his body—he could manipulate every part of it, if need be—but he simply didn’t like the taste.

Incense was a different thing altogether. His fingers slipped into the little paper wrapper and pulled out a stalk, setting it in its holder. The box of matches made rushing sounds like a rain stick when he picked it up. He clasped a single wooden match with his fingernails and drew it out, holding it more firmly to strike it, and then to light the tip of the incense. Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 4

My father and I went riding together, over West Hill, the next time we met. His moods had not improved lately, yet he still insisted we spend this time together, as designated, every week. The air was warming nicely now, the frits nesting and full summer not long off.

“I hear that there is a grain shortage,” I said to him.

“Where did you hear that?” He rode with one hand holding the reins, the other on the pommel of his sword. The path the horses climbed was too narrow here for us to go side by side, so he went first.

“Here and there.” Jorin had told me he had heard it from the guards. “Is it true?” Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 16

Capricious: Chapter 8

Chapter 8

Luke grabbed the shotgun that was always right inside the door and was off the porch before he realized it was full dark, with only the waning gibbous moon lighting the scene before him. The screams in the yard were garbled, inhuman, but easy enough to pinpoint. Saul wrestled with a creature in the moonlight, his bright white fur streaked with something darker. Luke raised the gun. 3rd Night—Feel It

They had enjoyed drinks together at the club. The only thing left over was an empty beer bottle, rested on the counter beside the register. No need for fresh drinks. Their thirst had found other means.

It was cold outside. It was always fairly cool, being subterranean, but sometimes certain features of the city—and of course, stray magic residue—led to variation in temperature, however subtle. The most delightful thing about Noctemburg’s unique weather, in Dhiar’s mind, was the fact that it could and did rain, thanks to underground water sources and natural condensation. At certain times of the year, mist blanketed city streets like spun cotton. He felt like he was crawling in bedclothes, when he went out on those days. Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 3
