I played the part of Roichal’s page for a few more days, as he and the field marshal checked over the growing army. One morning, though, Roichal’s leg was so stiff, he could not mount his horse, and no amount of cursing and railing (and it was quite an amount, let me assure you) would change that. Marksin eventually forced him to lie back down and then went away, returning quickly with a jar which he thrust into my hands. “Go on. This will help him,” was all he said, and then he hurried off, to make the inspections himself, I supposed.

Roichal actually uttered a moan then, the first sound of discomfort I could recall him making. He must have been in great pain. I hurried to kneel next to the pallet and show him the jar.

He clucked his tongue. “This salve is strong stuff, Page, but there is nothing else for it. Give it here.” Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 33

When next I woke, I found Kan lying next to me, propped up on one elbow, as if he had been watching me sleep.

Much like Kenet used to. And will again! I told myself, but at that moment he felt very far away. And who knew if Seroi had somehow changed him by now?

These thoughts must have shown on my face. Kan stroked my hair in sympathy. “You’re not alone anymore,” he said. “You’re a Night Rider now.” Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 32

The next day dawned damp and chill, but the fog burned off by midmorning. From the rise where Roichal’s tent was pitched I could see a large portion of the camp. How many men were here? Thousands, certainly. Finding Jorin was going to be quite a task. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 31

When I came to, I was still bound, but this time my hands were in front of me and I was not blindfolded. I was lying on a blanket that smelled of horse and I appeared to be in a small tent.

My head felt like metalsmiths with hammers were shaping it from the inside and my mouth was as dry as if they had gagged me with cloth. I winced as someone pulled aside the flap of the tent and the brightness felt like needles in my eyes. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 30

We passed a check point of some kind around dawn, the guards bantering with Jort before letting us pass, and the wagon rolled on and on. I wondered why I didn’t feel hungry at all, but my stomach was in such knots from fear and worry I couldn’t have eaten anything now even if my hands had been free and a banquet were in front of me. In the morning a commander came, and he and two other officers supervised our march from the camp. They hadn’t given us weapons yet, or orders, and I wondered how far we would be going. Not far on foot, it turned out, as they marched us down to the river and loaded us onto a barge. We were twenty four men in total, including the commander and his second, and two bowmen who took turns on top. From the way the other men eyed them I knew they were less there to protect us from the enemy than to shoot any of us that tried to flee. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 28

I wondered if the wagon would roll all night. Didn’t horses need to sleep, too? What about the driver? For myself, I was not sleepy at all. I was thankful for the summer night, as a chill stole over me that surely would have been unbearable had the air been colder. The creaking of the wheels and the sound of the hooves lulled me, but I did not sleep.

I could see little of what we passed. The road down the mountain was lined with trees, then at some point the way became flat. I could see from the stars above that now the mountains were to one side of us. East. We were going east, but I had no idea how far. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 27

I was woken once during the night, when the driver stopped to urinate and urged me to do the same. He didn’t untie my hands, instead just pulling down the rough trousers I wore and telling me to crouch. Once back in the carriage, I stayed on the floor, afraid of being thrown from the bench if we hit a rough patch of road.

I woke again when the carriage lurched to a stop and I hit my bruised cheek against the floor. Daylight came through the narrow window and I could hear voices. I raised my head only to find my neck so stiff from having slept with my arms tied behind my back that I could barely get myself into a sitting position before the door swung open. I blinked, trying to clear my vision, then realized one of my eyes was swollen shut. The man standing there was wearing a military uniform.

It took me a moment to remember why I was in so much pain. Seroi. The king. The beating. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 26

Don’t ask me what came over me. As they dragged Jorin away, and another scream was building in my chest, I suddenly became calm somewhere deep inside. I would not let them do this. It was as if in that moment the light shone on me for the very first time and I saw the world around me.

I screamed. And then I fell limp into Bear’s arms, feigning a faint, knowing that he would carry me straight to my room. Or at least hoping so. He lifted me into his arms as if I were half my size and carried me from the hall. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 25

“That was some fine work,” Bear said, as he lifted the bucket of warm water to pour it over my head. “Even if Jaiks barely admits it.”

I grinned, running my hands through my hair as the water cascaded down, splashing at my bare feet on the stone. “I still wouldn’t want to be on the wrong end of his dagger,” I said. “He didn’t get to be captain of the guard by accident. Should I have really gone for his weak leg?” Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 24
