New Serial! “Chocolatiers of the High Winds” by H B Kurtzwilde: Chapter 1

Chapter One: Runaway

There was no point in trying to take in the scenery from a steam coach. The carriage rattled along in a shroud of smoke at high speed, but very low comfort. Each passenger fought his own private battle with motion sickness. The window seats were given to those who lost.

I was in a small room deep in the castle archives, reading, when Velred crept timorously up to the door.

I saved him the trouble of having to disturb me by yawning and turning toward him. “Oh, hello, Velred. Is it time for banquet already?” It was not unusual for me to lose myself in the diaries and arcana for hours at a time, as I searched for knowledge about my power.

“No, my prince,” he said with a bow. “Although if you have not yet taken a midday meal you certainly should. However that is not what I am here to tell you. There are some visitors seeking an audience with you.” Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Epilogue

When Seroi pulled free of me at last, I had no fight left in me. That had been his purpose, of course, to break down my resistance. But I never begged for mercy. I never gave him that satisfaction. I never truly broke.

And I never believed, even when the pain was at its worst, that he would win. The vision I’d had, of Sergetten’s argument with the mage, made sense to me now, and so did Kenet’s seductive moves. Sergetten had come out and said it to his face, and still Seroi had not believed in the protection of the royal blood. Why did one not strike the royal flesh? Perhaps in olden times one did not because it brought down the wrath of the skies. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 96

Oh Jorin, forgive me. This time I must ask you to forgive me the way I forgave you. I knew what he was going to do to you and there was no way around it. There was no way I could prevent it. I tried. You know I did. I tried to offer myself to him. But the mage believed you had to be defeated before he would try take me for his own.

As I lay curled in a ball, trying not to hear your screams, I wished and hoped that it was not so bad on you as it sounded. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 95

From within the glare of the candles, I could barely make out what was going on in the room. Seroi dragged the king in front of Kenet, but what were they doing to him? I could not quite see nor hear, as the stronger Seroi grew, the more like a wall the ring of light and smoke became.

But then I could see the scuffle and feel the power shifting in the room. Now everyone out there was moving. Had reinforcements arrived? Perhaps they could, collectively, defeat the damn snake…?

The struggle went on for some time, with shouting and the occasional scream. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 94

I tried to be stoic as the fight began. I tried to kneel off to the side where the mage had put me and draw no attention to myself. I needed him to believe me harmless and cowed.

When Jorin felled Bear, though, I am sure I had been as wide-eyed as an owl. I had never seen Bear bested in combat, and I had never seen Jorin attack someone that way. I held my tongue, though, saying nothing, not even a whimper. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 93

Oh, it was hard to watch Kenet display himself before the mage that way. It was even harder to watch him pretend to lust for the man. But I never doubted him. I never thought for one moment that Kenet might betray me, or us, for his own comfort or pleasure. I never thought for one moment that he was doing anything other than manipulating Seroi.

For one thing, I could feel how difficult it was for him to stay hard. I took control of his arousal then, as Sergetten had done to me so many times, and Seroi, in his own lustful rapture, was unaware that Kenet’s state was more due to me than to him.

Not every mage could see the strands of Night Magic that connected one man to another, one lover to another. Powerful as he was, it appeared that to this, Seroi was blind. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 92

We were making our way through the twisted tunnels that would bring us within sight of the Rose Gate when I heard the sound of footsteps ahead of us, someone climbing in a hurry.

Before I could react, Kan came bounding up the steps, his sword sheathed. He stopped short and just stared at the three of us in the gloom. “Kenet?”

“Yes, and Bear is with me, and… and our father.” Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 91

Kan followed me through the passages. We went past the room that Kenet and I had shared in the years we had lived here, but there was no time to pause for nostalgia.

I was making for the tower that Seroi called his own. “If he is holding Bolan’s son and the other boys hostage, I would wager that is where they will be,” I said to Kan. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 90

“My prince, this is… this was not in the plan,” Bear said nervously.

“Rescuing my father most certainly was in the plan,” I answered as I picked my way to the top of the Snake Ladder.

“You gallivanting off alone was not in the plan,” he clarified. “And, I’m sorry, my prince, but I will not fit down there.”

Indeed, it looked as if his shoulders would get stuck after only a few steps. “I am just going to have a look. If I can, I’ll speak with him, and then bring him with me back to you. We must get him out of the mage’s clutches.” Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 89
