30th Night—The Last Day of Our Love

“You really have to go?” Dhiar pouted, sticking his lower lip out as his hands kneaded along the angel’s foot. His thumbs circled outward, along the tissues and muscles and connections.

Siros looked down to the Incubus, slowly smiling, moving his toes. “Only for a little while,” he murmured. “And I’m sure you won’t be bored. There are plenty of handsome gentlemen in this city.”

“And just handsome men who aren’t so much gentlemen,” Dhiar quipped, giggling as he worked his hands up over the angel’s ankles, over his calves and shins, around his knees dallying and dipping his face down to kiss each once. “I’m sure there will be rapturous lovers where you’ll be?” Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 30

A man on horseback approached, more than that I did not know. We each stood at the ready, weapons drawn, and I wondered if we should be hiding behind trees. But then Kan raised his hand and Sergetten did the same, each whispering words in a language I did not recognize, and I looked around us in amazement as each man seemed to melt into shadow, myself included. No wonder the Night Riders had eluded their pursuers for so long.

We held our breath, for though we were invisible now, the camp was still easily discovered by anyone who came through this section of the woods. I could hear the steady tramp of a horse. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 42

Chapter 35

For a moment, Sally looked alarmed. “Do you… ah… want kids?” she asked Luke.

Luke looked down at Sally’s stomach. A series of images flashed though his mind in quick succession, like a film montage–Sally holding a baby, following an exploring toddler at the park, sitting with a young child doing homework, reading a dark-haired little girl to sleep. He tried to imagine Sally pregnant. Pregnant with his baby, her tummy round and smooth. He brought his hands around to the front of her waist and ran his thumbs over her currently mostly flat stomach.

“Yeah,” he said, “I do want kids. You and I, we’d make some pretty ones.” Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 35

29th Night—Oh, Maker

Transitions were always the most exciting and dreadful parts of any journey. All the questions and possibilities presented hope and despair both, and none of them could be certain until the destination. As the old saying went, “getting there is half the fun”. The next morning I opened my eyes expecting to find Marksin lying next to the pallet, but he was already up and about. The general stirred the moment I moved, and seemed much revived, claiming it had been the best night’s sleep he’d had since before the war had begun. His leg was stronger, and in the afternoon he and three commanders rode up onto a nearby ridge to survey the army from there. I stayed behind with Marksin. Neither he, nor the general, said a word about what had happened the night before, but Marksin and I acknowledged each other with a shared glance from time to time.

While the surveying was going on, Marksin enlisted my aid in paperwork, for I could read, write, and figure sums. “Each battalion will eat two bullocks a day, right down to the hooves,” he told me, “so figure for me how many head of cattle we shall need to feed the entire encampment for two more weeks.” Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 41

Chapter 34

Luke’s brow furrowed as Cormick turned onto the highway that would lead to Sally’s house–or rather, Sally’s parents’ house. “We going to your place?” he asked her.

“Yeah,” Sally said, “it’s kinda become our base of operations.”

“Since when?” Luke felt like he’d missed something important, some little detail that would pop the whole scene into focus. “How long was I gone? Felt like a few hours to me.” Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 34

Check out the Schoolbooks and Sorcery Kickstarter

Take high school. It’s weird, confusing, complicated, and frustrating. It’s a time of growth and change, when teens start discovering what they’re made of and who they want to be. Now throw in magic. What happens? That’s the premise of this new YA anthology. Schoolbooks & Sorcery, edited by Michael Jones, is what happens when you take all the normal ups and downs of high school, inject a healthy dose of magic, shake, stir, and serve.

Schoolbooks & Sorcery is also a queer-friendly YA anthology, embracing the full spectrum of sexuality and gender identification, while offering a wide selection of satisfying, entertaining, fascinating, powerful stories in which the mundane and the magical overlap and interact.

With an all-star lineup of authors including Seanan McGuire, E. C. Meyers, and Nina Kiriki Hoffman,  Schoolbooks and Sorcery  takes place in the overlapping area between urban fantasy, high school, and LGBTQ issues and themes, sending the message that it’s not just okay to be gay, it’s okay to be gay and to have the same crazy, wicked, scary, seductive, exciting, magical, strange, funny, romantic, dark adventures as everyone else.

Sponsors can get various nifty swag as well as the book itself, and even copies of Michael’s previous anthology,  Scheherazade’s Facade.

28th Night—Oh To Be In Love

“I hope you’re not getting bored with the Great City,” Dhiar all but whispered, his arms coiled around the angel’s as they continued down the path.

Siros looked suddenly to the side, to face the Incubus, smiling to him with a little surprise in his countenance. “How could I? It’s endlessly interesting! There’s countless places to go, countless things to do… and one magnificently special Incubus to do them with.”

All around and above them curled the underground gardens, subterranean and lush below the city of Dis itself. The winding passages twisted this way and that, coming to entrances and exits like some sort of floral subway. Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 28

I went to Gresh. Somehow, I knew if I was to find an ally among the Night Riders against Sergetten, he would be the most likely candidate.

I was correct. I shared some cold bread with him as dawn broke and Kan and Sergetten were still in hushed, vehement conference. We sat on fallen logs and broke out the rations, waiting for the others to join us. There would be no cooking fire this morning while we hid from detection. “So,” I said, carefully at first, “Sergetten is Kan’s mentor in Night Magic?” Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 40

Chapter 33

Orson considered the spear in his lap. “Cuchulainn’s spear…. It’s strange to see it after so many years, and in such a different setting. Like seeing your kindergarten teacher in the supermarket–a collision of worlds.” He looked back up at Luke. “So you paid for the spear with some of your past life memories–that’s good, actually. Frankly I’m surprised she’d barter with you, those fae wraiths are a dangerous lot. Normally she would have just drunk you dry, or at least hung you up for later.” Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 33
